Auto-optimization
Auto-optimization revisits your sitemap at the cadence you choose, spots new and changed pages, and optimizes them without you opening the dashboard. It is how you keep a site current when its content changes often.
Turning it on#
The entry point is the status bar shown on Overview and on Pages: click Set up if it is off, or Manage if it is already running. A side panel opens.
- Pick a cadence
Daily, weekly or monthly. See the table below.
- Set a monthly token cap, if you want one
Optional field. Stops auto-optimization once it has spent that many tokens beyond the package during the month.
- Confirm consent
You have to tick the box acknowledging that auto-optimization will use your plan's package and, once that is used up, your tokens.
- Click Enable
The status bar switches to Auto-optimization active and shows the next run.
Choosing a cadence#
| Cadence | Description | Suits |
|---|---|---|
| Daily | The most aggressive. | Fast-moving catalogues, stores with high turnover, publishers. |
| Weekly | The balanced default: catches new and changed pages without overspending. | Most sites. |
| Monthly | The lightest. | Stable sites, catalogues that barely change, tight budgets. |
How it is billed#
Every page auto-optimization processes first uses one unit of your plan's optimization package. Once the package is used up, each further page costs 1 token: the same tokens that pay for visibility queries.
Monthly token cap#
This is the handbrake. If you set one, auto-optimization stops as soon as it has spent that many tokens beyond your package during the month, and resumes in the next billing period.
If you turn auto-optimization on for a large site and want no surprises, start with the weekly cadence and a conservative monthly token cap. Raise the cap once you have seen real usage in the history.
Pause, resume and turn off#
Following the runs#
The panel shows the last run and the next one. Every run is recorded in Change history as Auto-optimization scheduled run, with the detail of what changed and how much it spent.
Auto-optimization only processes new or changed pages. It does not re-optimize pages that have not changed, so on a stable site usage tends towards zero after the first pass.
